Birds Of A Feather: Hihi

Tara iti (Fairy Tern) - Smaller and daintier than the more plentiful migratory Tern, our endemic Tara iti is extremely endangered with only a handful of breeding pairs left in Aotearoa. These coastal birds nest on the sand in only four locations: Waipu, Mangawhai, Pakiri and South Kaipara Head. Tara iti feeds by hovering metres in the air above the water before diving down for their supper - without getting fully emersed. Artwork by Marigold Janezic
