Hihi Stitchbird on Hebe -Hihi, Aotearoa New Zealand’s rarest bird, lives in native forest on Hauturu Little Barrier Island. Hihi has been extinct on the mainland since colonial times, but is now found in several wildlife sanctuaries. They are socially complex birds and have even been observed visiting other nests and even sharing care of the young. Hihi is also the only bird known to sometimes mate face to face.
